Crunching the Numbers From Spring 2010

Phase One — Water Heater Rebates:
• Jan 31 – Feb 21, 2010
• 4350 water heater units purchased
• $536,000 in rebates given out
• $2.35 million generated in sales
• 24 billion total annual expected Btu savings (using U.S. Dept of Energy’s calculations)


Phase Two — for HVAC System Rebates:
• Jan 31 – Apr 5, 2010
• Projected 5,500 HVAC systems purchased
• Projected $3.6 million in rebates given out
• Projected $33 million generated in sales
• 61 billion total annual expected Btu savings (using U.S. Dept of Energy’s calculations)


Phase Three — Home Appliance Rebates:
• April 16, 2010 8 a.m. – 7 p.m.
• Projected 62,089 new appliances purchased
• Projected $7.5 million in rebates given out between in-store sales and mail-in rebates for
   recycling refrigerators and freezers
• Projected $37.5 million generated in sales
• Projected 60% of appliances sold were refrigerators and freezers

Mail-In Phase
Consumers who took advantage of the in-store rebate for refrigerators and freezers were able to save even more by recycling their old appliances. From April 17 – July 9, 2010, those who had their old unit hauled away or recycled could receive another $75 rebate. We're still crunching the numbers so check back to find out how many people took advantage of this additional rebate.


Program Overview
The Illinois State Energy Office is pleased to present the Illinois ENERGY STAR® Appliance Rebate Program, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO). This program provides incentives for Illinois consumers to replace older appliances with specific residential ENERGY STAR qualified appliances, water heaters, and HVAC equipment. The new appliances must be purchased in Illinois through participating retail stores or contractors.

Illinois consumers, contractors and retailers have benefited greatly from the first phase of the program, which generated more than $30 million in water heater and HVAC sales.
